The rigorous physical practices of the Yamabushi (mountain warriors of Japan) offer valuable benefits to modern-day martial artists, even for those like myself, who aren’t drawn to the spiritual aspects.
By integrating elements of the Yamabushi’s disciplined approach into training, martial artists can cultivate a more resilient mind, a stronger body, and a deeper sense of self-discipline. All key factors that enhance performance and success in martial arts. These practices include mountain running at night, walking on hot coals, meditating in icy water, fasting, and other challenging exercises.
While segments of these practices are present in many traditional Japanese martial arts, in one former another, we never pressure anyone to adopt them at our dojo. We simply share the potential benefits, recognizing that this type of training isn’t for everyone. For those who choose to embrace it, the experience is truly rewarding and life altering.
