The Dojo: Private Membership?

Updated: Aug 18

People often ask why we became a private dojo. The truth is, we haven't closed our doors to anyone; we've simply refined our approach to teaching and fostering creativity.

Our journey began in a garage, a space we called "the Kai," where a small group of passionate individuals gathered to practice martial arts. Over time, as we moved from one location to another, our vision evolved, and we embraced a broader identity, becoming The Dojo—a place of the way, where the way is to blend and create.

At our core, we are a community of artists—painters, dancers, writers, musicians, sculptors, and martial artists—all united by the belief that art, in any form, is a deeply personal expression. Just as no two MMA fighters are the same, each member of our dojo develops as an individual, allowing their art—whether on canvas, in movement, or in combat—to take shape in a way that is uniquely theirs.

Our foundation is built on the principles of MMA, where we've trained world champions and honed the skills of many local and regional champions . But while we respect the realism and discipline of combat sports, our hearts are drawn to the beauty of traditional arts. We blend the old with the new, mixing ancient Asian and European techniques with modern MMA to create something both practical and beautiful. If a technique can't be applied in sparring, we value it as a form of exercise—a way to appreciate the discipline and artistry of martial arts.

Over the years, we've welcomed many martial artists to share their knowledge with our students, creating an environment where cross-training and exploration are encouraged. Our students are free to train with other schools, to leave and return as they wish, reflecting the fluidity and openness of our community. Visitors—family, friends, and fellow artists—are always welcome. We are a casual school, a blend of a gym and a dojo, where music plays in the background, laughter fills the air, and camaraderie is as important as the training itself.

Every class begins and ends with the sound of the gong, a tradition that gathers us together and centers our focus. Students are never pressured to do anything beyond their comfort, but we do encourage them to confront their fears, take risks, and grow as individuals. Our ultimate goal is to help each person become a happier, more productive member of the community.

So, why are we a private dojo? The answer is simple: we aren't. Our doors are always open to those who seek to explore, learn, and express themselves in an environment that values both tradition and innovation, discipline and creativity. We are a community that thrives on diversity, where every individual's path is respected and celebrated.
