When I was training in the old warrior arts, I discovered a common, effective path to mastery across different disciplines and cultures.
In ancient times, warriors trained not only their bodies but also their minds, using a method known as “Walking the Stones.” This technique was designed to help warriors become independent, confident, and self-reliant. The stones represent nine or more essential principles, each guiding the warrior—and now us—on a journey toward mastery in life. Here is a sample of these stones:
Balance
Balance is the foundation of walking the stones. It teaches the importance of maintaining both physical and mental equilibrium. In life, balance helps us stay grounded and centered, ensuring we approach challenges with calm and clarity.
Wisdom
Wisdom follows balance, as it involves understanding how to apply knowledge thoughtfully. A wise warrior learns from experience and makes informed decisions.
Resilience
Resilience is the ability to recover from setbacks and continue moving forward. In life, resilience helps us overcome difficulties and persist in our goals, turning obstacles into stepping stones.
Power
Power in this context is not just about mastering technique and action. A powerful warrior uses their energy efficiently, acting decisively and with purpose in life.
Technique
Technique emphasizes the importance of precision in action. In life, technique reminds us that knowing how to do something well is as important as doing it, guiding us to approach our tasks with skill and care.
Speed
Speed is about accomplishing tasks correctly within the right amount of time. In life, speed helps us seize opportunities promptly and achieve our objectives without unnecessary delay.
Timing
Timing is the ability to know when to act and when to wait. In life, timing teaches us to recognize the right moment to make decisions, ensuring that we act when it will be most effective.
Independence
Independence is the courage to find one’s own path. In life, independence encourages us to embrace our individuality, make our own choices, and confidently pursue our unique journey.
Leadership
Leadership is about guiding others and helping them find their way. A true warrior not only fights but also leads by example, inspiring those around us to achieve their best.
Walking the Stones was more than just a physical training regimen; it was an early form of life coaching, guiding warriors—and now us—toward a balanced, powerful, and independent life. The stones serve as a timeless roadmap, helping us navigate the complexities of our journey with grace, strength, and wisdom. Today, we can all benefit from the ancient wisdom of Walking the Stones, using these principles to cultivate our inner warrior, lead with confidence, and live a life filled with purpose, individuality, and fulfillment. In our Dojo, Walking the Stones is entirely optional, yet those who choose to walk this path often find themselves transformed in profound ways.
